Seamless connected user experience for drivers across pre, during and post trip scenarios
Summary
A design program to create a smart, intelligentconnected experience that support drivers planoperations, predict maintenance, log repairs andmanage downtime across the fleet for UD Trucks culminating in more effiency across the business.
Services
Lead Designer, UI/UX
Client
UD Trucks (2021)

Standardisation
Drivers have different ways of doing things in different locations and countries. Aligning these processes and tasks would be more efficient for the business.
Efficiency
Some of the trips can be quite efficient for the business in terms of fuel costs and maintenance costs for the trucks. Optimising this will make the business more efficient.
Adminstration
Currently there is a lot of paper work to fill in for drivers on their pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
Unsavvy audience
In most of the areas of operations, the truck drivers are middle aged and not technically savvy. As a result the experience has to be considered for all types of users.
Automation
Digitize and automate pre trip inspection checkpoints removing lots of unnecessary paperwork for drivers.
Discoverability
Serve drivers information on fuel stations, fuel type, Ad blue & dealership locations before or during one of their trips
Monitoring
Monitor fuel type, usage & distance for efficient trip logistics / planning to predict and enable maintenance, repairs and support
Development
Management of performance support across dashboards & touch-points to empower the drivers to improve their performance after each trip
• Established driver proto-personas, focusing on one persona to demonstrate a 'day in the life of' to craft the pre-trip, during-trip and post-trip flows.
• Lead the Visual design production of the templates based on the pre-trip, during-trip and post-trip journey flow adhering to iOS guidelines and conventions.
• Designed core screens in Dark Mode for the stakeholders to test with users ensuring the designs will be accessible for drivers on night trips.
• Created click through prototypes in Figma for stakeholders to navigate through and a high-fidelity interactive prototype in Protopie closely mirroring a real app-like experience.
We created a few proto-persona’s which describethe UD truck drivers based on the assumptionsof the UD stakeholders. Creating this ad-hoc personaallowed us to begin designing and building immediately without getting overly bogged down with the detailsof user behaviour. From there we created an end-to-end user journey which would form the basis of the IA and Wireframes that were to be designed in the later phases.
Ahmad carries out a pre-trip check with the guidance of the app on his mobile device. He is presented with multiple screens with a simple way of validating the checks ranging from checking tyre pressure to making sure wheel bolts are screwed on tight.available by utilizing open banking APIs to determine his current home insurance product is about to expire.
During the trip Ahmad looks up to his phone which is fixed to the dash of his truck. There he is able to quickly see how much AdBlue and Fuel he has remaining. He gets a notification alert for braking too harshly appear on his display, allowing him to address the braking and improve his score.
Ahmad finishes his post trip checks and heads over to the crew resting area.He launches the UD Trucks app and views his post trip summary, he receives a score of 74/100 and is delighted, he swipes down and views some cards that give him tips and tricks to improve his score.
As a lot of the drivers routes involve driving at night it was essential for us to optimise the experience to work in both the day and the night. We devised a dark-mode colour scheme which would still offer enough contrast to clearly define content areas. The main brand accent colurs were robust enough to work across both colour schemes allowng us to retain brand consistency as much as possible.
